Is there an SPF rating for the UV Head Veil?

The UV Head Veil does not currently have an SPF (sun protection factor) rating.

While the formula contains UV filters, it has not been tested or classified as an SPF product. Instead, it was designed as a lightweight, multi-benefit mist to help care for hair and scalp exposed to the sun, while delivering hydration, nourishment and after sun comfort.

The top three of four ingredients (excluding alcohol which carries the product onto the hair) contain a range of UVA and UVB filters. You can read about them all on the Ingredients page.

Never forget: Prolonged high risk sun exposure should be avoided. Reapply frequently and use in accordance with directions for effective UV protection. Pair with a hat, headscarf or some shade as part of your daily sun care routine.

Is the UV Head Veil reef safe?

The Short Answer: Not under the strict legal definitions used in places like Hawaii. We’ve formulated the UV Head Veil without ingredients like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, which are known to be harmful to coral reefs. However, we do use high-performance UV filters (like Octocrylene) so the spray stays invisible in your hair while still giving effective UV protection.

The Long Answer: “Reef safe” is a broad term used to describe products that aim to minimise harm to coral ecosystems. To create a formula that has a wider range of UV filtering ingredients that actually works on hair and scalp (without leaving residue or heaviness), we use a lightweight hybrid UV filter system. You can find a full ingredient list and breakdown on our Ingredients page.

If you are swimming directly over a protected coral reef (lucky you!), we recommend following local guidelines which often require mineral-only sunscreens. For the pool, the beach club or a sunny walk, the UV Head Veil is your hair’s best defence against UV damage and brassiness.

How should I store the UV Head Veil?

Like us, your UV Head Veil prefers warmer temperatures. Store above 10°C and avoid leaving it in cold environments for long periods. If it gets too chilly, it may temporarily crystallise. To resolve, let it come back to room temperature and give it a good shake before applying.
